Grocery inflation still rising, hitting 5.86% in August
New figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show that grocery inflation continued to rise in August, increasing from 5.43% to 5.86% now.
Today’s figures show that shoppers contributed an additional €68.2m to the grocery market’s overall performance in August, due to several festivals, sell-out concerts and the Galway Races.
Take-home value sales rose 6.2% over the four weeks to 10 August although shoppers were in store less often, with trips down 0.5%. When in store, shoppers also continued to pick up less packs per trip, down 2.6%.
Today’s figures show that consumers spent €7.2m extra on alcohol and an additional €1.3m on suncare during the latest four week period.
They also spent an additional €8.9m on take-home soft drinks and chocolate.
Worldpanel by Numerator noted that with such busy calendars, nearly €1m more was spent by shoppers on sports and energy drinks compared to the same time last year.
The figures also reveal that shoppers spent €735m on promotional lines, an 8.9% increase compared to the previous year.
Key growth categories included alcohol, frozen and household all growing ahead of the total market for promotional lines.
Worldpanel by Numerator’s figures also show that total online shopping currently holds 5.6% value share of the market, with sales rising by 6.8% year-on-year, and shoppers spending an additional €12.5m through this channel.
Shoppers purchased their groceries more often online, up 7.6%, contributing €13.8m to its overall performance, down on last month’s €15.7m, they added.
Supermarket market share
Today’s figures show that Dunnes holds a 23.5% market share, with sales growth of 6.3% year-on-year. Dunnes shoppers returned to store more often, up 2.2%, which contributed €16.7m to their overall performance.
Tesco holds 23.4% of the market, with value growth of 5.6% year-on-year. Shoppers increased their trips to store by 2.9%, which contributed €22.3m to overall performance.
SuperValu holds 19.7% of the market with growth of 4.2%. Consumers made the most shopping trips to the supermarket chain, averaging 25.6 trips over the latest 12 weeks – up 9.6% year-on-year. This increase in the number of shopping trips contributed an additional €61.6m to its performance.
Meanwhile, Lidl holds 14.2% of the market with growth of 9.5%, while it also saw shoppers pick up more volume in store, up 3.1%, contributing an additional €13.8m to overall performance.
Aldi holds an 11.8% market share, up 4.4%. Increased store trips and new shoppers drove an additional €13.3m in sales, toda’s figures show.
