Flogas to increase variable electricity charges from August
Energy company Flogas is to increase its variable electricity charges by around 7%, with effect from 25 August.
Flogas said this marks its first price increase in three years and comes after a 15% reduction in its electricity rates last year.
The company said its residential natural gas customers are unaffected by the price hike.
For a typical Flogas residential electricity customer, the changes will mean an increase of around €10.51 a month, or €126 a year, on their bills
Flogas currently has 43,500 residential electricity customers on variable rates.
It said its residential electricity customers on fixed rates are unaffected by the hike.
Flogas Energy Managing Director Sean O’Loughlin said that while the company understands that any price change can be challenging for customers, today’s announcement reflects a 21% increase in network charges introduced in October 2024, with further increases anticipated in October 2025.
“We will support affected customers through our Customer Service team as much as possible and have a range of options, including payment plans, Budget Plan and pre-payment meters,” he said.
“We would ask any Flogas customer who is facing financial pressure around their energy bills to contact us,” he added.
Darragh Cassidy, from price comparison website bonkers.ie, said Flogas is a “smaller player” in the energy market with up to 50,000 subscribers.
But he added that unfortunately, the other suppliers are probably likely to follow suit over the coming weeks and months by increasing their charges as well.
He said the increase comes as the Government says there probably will not be any further energy credits given this winter.
As a result, it looks as though some energy customers “will struggle over the coming months,” he added.
