Hotel and cinema trips drive higher spending in July

Spending in July jumped 7% on the previous month and 4% on the same time last year, new data from AIB shows.

Spend in hotels was up 7% month-on-month, with spend highest among the 35 to 44 year old age group.

A surge in cinema spend was driven by cooler than average weather in July.

Saturday 20 July saw the highest daily cinema spend of the year, with Despicable Me 4 and Twisters enticing viewers.

The figures also show the largest monthly spend by AIB card customers on record in France, while back to school uniform spending peaked on 30 July.

Spend on EV charging also rose last month.

“It is heartening to see that card spend on electrical vehicle charging rose 8% month on month and 45% year on year as customers play their part in driving the transition to a lower carbon future,” said Adrian Moynihan, Head of Consumer at AIB.

“These data insights are crucial for businesses to help them plan accordingly and support our customers in their choices,” he added.
