Labour calls for carbon tax credit for households in Budget 2022

Labour is calling for a carbon tax credit for households in Budget 2022 to address the rising cost of gas and electricity.

In its pre-Budget submission the party is seeking a credit of €200 for those with an income of up to €50,000 and living in a home with a BER rating of less than B2.

The party is also advocating a €5 weekly increase in the weekly fuel allowance payment and to extend it by four weeks.

It says this would be worth an extra €272 over the period that the allowance is paid.

The allowance should also be extended for four weeks, the party says.

Labour is pushing for a €7.50 weekly increase in weekly welfare payments including the State pension.

Today the Rural Independent Group also launched its first pre-Budget submission.

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae said the rising cost of living meant that “mom’s purse was under savage attack”.

The Group wants weekly social welfare rates to rise by €10 in the Budget.

And it wants the annual carers’ support grant to rise to €2,000.

It is seeking a €7 per week increase to the fuel allowance from January and to increase the payment by eight weeks.

And it is proposing that any tax increase on diesel can be rebated back to hauliers.
