Average earnings rise by 3.5% last year – CSO
Average earnings in the economy rose by 3.5% last year, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.
The highest earnings were in the Information and Communication sector while the lowest earnings were in the Accommodation and Food Services sector.
Today’s CSO figures show that in the last three months of last year, average earnings across the economy were 3.5% higher than in the same period the previous year.
Wages grew fastest in the Accommodation and Food Services sector but this sector still has the lowest average earnings of just over €380 a week.
Meanwhile, the thriving IT sector saw wages rise by 6.2% to bring average earnings to €1,241 a week.
The Transportation and Storage sector was the only sector where earnings actually fell, the CSO figures reveal.
The CSO also said that workers employed in medium to large businesses saw greater increases in hourly earnings of between 3.9% and 4.6%.
People working in companies with less than 50 employees saw an average annual increase of 1.5%.
Average hourly earnings across the public sector rose by 2.6% compared to 3.6% in the private sector. However, average weekly earnings in health were up 6%.
